NEW ARRIVALS! Chablis from Domaine Guy Robin
Picture this: You’re a successful business person in Paris. The world of art is your expertise, and you spend your days hob-nobbing with rich and famous collectors, even a few world leaders.
Then you get a call, and your life changes completely.
Marie-Ange Robin in the early 2000s traded Michelin-starred lunches for tractors after her father, Guy, decided for health reasons that it was time to hang up his vine-grower’s hat. If she didn’t come home, he said, he’d sell the property — and with it, a crucial slice of Chablis history.
Her decision nearly two decades ago saved not only her family’s life work but also the roots — literally — of what makes Chablis so great.
Today Domaine Guy Robin is for Chablis die-hards the ultimate source of true Chablis wines, as it cares for some of the oldest, original vines in the region.
Let’s step inside a time machine to put this all in perspective.
In the 1960s, many Chablis producers tore up their vines to plant new clones which produced more fruit (to make more wine and thus more profits). It takes courage and integrity to not follow the herd. Being as old school as they get, Guy Robin balked at this idea. He stuck with his original vines, as he felt they translated the true character of Chablis terroir into wine far better than the new, high-yielding interlopers.
In short, the old vines made Chablis, while the new vines just made Chardonnay.
Granted, one can argue over the nature of authenticity for longer than it takes a grape to grow and ripen, but the proof, as always, is in the glass. What silences any argument for us are the layers and profound intensity of flavor that each bottle of Robin Chablis delivers.
If you are looking to better understand the many faces of premier and grand cru Chablis, the defining characteristics at the core of each of these stunning northern alabaster vineyards, then Robin Chablis is your source.
And you’re in luck! A limited selection of older vintages and new wines from 2014 have just arrived in Berkeley.
There’s no question that Domaine Guy Robin now has achieved a level of greatness for which it was always destined. These wines are stunning, expressive and texturally divine. If you love Chablis like we do, you will not want to miss this new and exciting lineup.
